Sam's Golden Wrench is in honor of Sam Williams, a terrific auto mechanic and avid reader, active in his church.
Read the qualifications listed below in order to make
sure your student in grades 9-12 will qualify.
a) Enrolled with NCCS for at least one academic year before the award date of May 1, 2010.
b) Vocational major enrolled in grades 9-12 (includes accounting, auto mechanics, business management, business technology office systems, business technology electronic media, construction, culinary arts, fashion, health care, & landscaping).
c) Academic GPA of 2.7 or higher (C+) & a vocational courses GPA of 3.7 or higher (A)
d) Student completes in the award year the reading contest for the appropriate grade level.
e) Student is actually doing work (paid or unpaid) in their vocational area of interest. For examples, the auto major would be regularly working on cars, the landscaping major is regularly working on lawns & gardens, the culinary major would be regularly cooking and providing meals to family & community, the fashion major would be sewing and wearing their own clothes, & the web designer would have created and kept up one or more websites.
f) Student demonstrates initiative & consistency in their schoolwork, major work, community service activities, and church work.
g) Student is either being mentored by or partnering with someone already in their major field, which could include a supervisor.
h) Student practices punctuality, good manners, and a clean, neat appearance in the public arena.
i) Student must attend the Award Ceremony in May to accept the award.
j) Student can received this award more than once.
k) The award will be given in combination of cash and in US Savings Bonds. The student would be expected to use the award to further his or her career via education, purchase of equipment, payment of licensing fees, etc.
l) Deadline to apply is April 1, 2010. Application packets must be completed by that date for consideration. Applications will be available in February. Please email us if you are interested or have questions.
The award may not be given every year if the review committee does not find an appropriate winner.
